This is a casein and watercolor on paper sketch for a doublepage spread

illustration for the poem "The Cow" in this collection of verses by Robert

Louis Stevenson. It is the work of English artist, Brian Wildsmith, recipient

of the Kate Greenaway medal, Britain's equivalent to the Caldecott award

for children's book illustration. Wildsmith's expressionistic illustration

uses paint well to instill emotion. The detailed expression on the cow's

face makes her appear friendly and inviting. She holds a bouquet of flowers

in her mouth, a bell hanging from her neck, her tail wagging happily behind

her. The illustrator sent this piece to Ms. Tanner especially from France.
