Under the bed there are bugs and beasts,nibbling crumbs for their midnight feasts, gobbling,squabbling,all night through, and much too busy to think about you.
床底下有好多的妖魔鬼怪，正在享用面包屑做的午夜大餐，它们狼吞虎咽、吵吵闹闹，整夜没个完，忙得顾不上去看你一眼。
（译注：bugs and beasts直译为臭虫和野兽，作者以两个同为B打头的异形生物——昆虫和兽类，泛指孩子害怕的东西，而图画里的怪物也不止限于臭虫和野兽，此处意译为“妖魔鬼怪”，使语句读起来更简明易懂）

（译注：从17到22作者用了五个 out of the room来使语句上下呼应和连贯，但如果全部译为“跑出房间、飞出房间，逃出房间……”一则无法兼顾韵律，二则易使行文呆板，因为英文中的语法可以将 out of the room 前置，而汉语只能将之放在后面，英文五个同样的前置语可以引出不同的下文，而汉语只能采用同样的句子来结尾，于是就显得没有英文那么灵动，这里只得放弃了前两个 out of the room的一致，而后三个 out of the room则全部译为“往外……”，这样也可以用不同的词语做结尾，保证了语句在一致和多变之间的平衡。）

（译注∶But you'd better just look, to be perfectly sure!直译是“你最好还是去看看，彻底确定一下”，这一句实际上是叫孩子不再怀疑，确信床下已没有怪物，并且sure是和more压韵，结束全文。这里采用语句倒装的译法，将结果（确定）前置，换为原因（怀疑），意思不变，也完成了压韵。）
