Oh,Boris!
Carrie Weston Tim Warnes
Even a big bear can feel small in a new school

For Dr Elizabeth Marsden - always a smile - C.W.
For the amazing Early Years Team at Piddle Valley. Thanks for everything. - T.W.

1
The day that Miss Cluck said there was going to be a new animal in the class, everyone was very excited.
2
When Miss Cluck said the new animal was a bear, the other animals squealed with delight.

Monday  Wednesday  Thursday  ..day

1P  2P  milk 5P

Tuesday-
Boris

Fergus-Monday!!          Wednesday!!           Friday!!
Today is Tuesday
The Weather is

Register   花名册

3
Leticia the rabbit wondered if it might be a fluffy pink bear, like the one on her lunchbox.
Maxwell the mole wanted a floppy brown bear with velvet paws.
The mice hoped for a bear in wellingtons and a duffle coat.
Fergus the fox cub thought any teddy bear would be just fine.
4
So, when the classroom door opened...
and Miss Cluck introduced Boris...
everyone...
5
screamed!
For Boris wasn't a teddy bear.
He was an enormous, hairy, scary, grizzly bear!
Miss Cluck
6
Miss Cluck found Boris a seat next to Maxwell.
Boris wanted to say 'hello' in his politest voice.
But as he sat down there was a loud crack.
It made Maxwell hide his face in his paws.
'Oh,Boris!'said Miss Cluck.
'We'd better find you a bigger chair.'

7 Miss cluck gave Boris a new book and a pencil.
He was very proud indeed.
With a big, friendly grin Boris turned to show the mice.
But Boris forgot how fierce his teeth were.
He forgot how big his paws were.
And he forgot how sharp his claws were.
8
Somehow, the mice got scattered across the classroom.
Somehow, the pages of his new book got ripped.
Somehow, there was panic everywhere.
'Boris is too big!'cried one little mouse.
'Boris is too hairy!'yelled another.
'Boris is too scary!'they all squeaked together.
'Oh, Boris!'said Miss Cluck.'Please try to be more careful.'
9
At lunchtime everyone sat together.
there was not enough room on the bench for Boris, but nobody moved up.
10
So he sat all by himself and dipped his big paw into the large jar of honey his mummy had packed for him.
When lunch was over Miss Cluck said everyone could go off and play.
11
The mice began a game of hide-and-seek.
'1...2...3...'
Everyone ran to find a place to hide. But Boris was too big.
12
So Boris shut his eyes and counted instead.
'one...two...three...coming to get you!'
Boris boomed.
'Eeek!'
'Stop!Stop!'
'No!No!'
Leticia shook with fear and clung to Fergus.
Maxwell ran crying to Miss Cluck.
Fergus   Leticia  Maxwell  Marcus Mouse  Monty Mouse  Murray Mouse
Red  blue yellow orange purple  green
14
'Let's go inside and play some quiet games.' said Miss Cluck,'and Boris, please try to be less scary, dear.'
15
The animals sat together in a circle.
There was no space for Boris.
16
Boris had nobody to play with and nobody to talk to. Tears filled his big, brown eyes. Large teardrops rolled down his long nose and splashed to the floor.
'I'm a scary bear,'he sniffed.
'I'm a hairy bear,'he sobbed.
'I'm just a great big grizzly bear.'
It seemed like a very long afternoon.

17
At last it was time to go home.
Miss Cluck stood and waved as the animals set off through the woods.
Leticia hopped along the bank.
Maxwell scampered through the leaves.
Fergus chased the little mice round a tree.
Boris plodded along far behind.
18
Suddenly, from a hollow tree leapt...
the rat pack!
19
'Well, well,if it isn't the boo-babies,'said the meanest rat.
'Just look at the scaredy-fox and the weedy chicken-licken mice!'
20
Leticia,Maxwell,Fergus, and the mice trembled while the rat pack circled round them.
21
The rats didn't see Boris plodding along the path.
All Boris could see was lots of excitenent ahead.
He wanted to join the fun.

22
Huffing and puffing, Boris stood up tall to greet the new friends with his biggest, widest bear grin and...

23
'Yikes!it's a hairy bear!'
'Help!it's a scary bear!'
'Quick!Run! it's a hairy,scary,grizzly bear!'
24
The rotten rats ran away as fast as their skinny legs could carry them.
'But I only wanted to say hello...'called Boris.
25
When Boris turned around, the other animals cheered.
'Boris is a hairy bear,'they sang.
'Boris is a scary bear,'they chanted.
'we're so glad that Boris is our grizzly bear!'
(译注:原文we're so glad that Boris is our grizzly bear!
26
Suddenly,Boris felt very shy.
'If you're going to be a bear,'he said very gently,'then it's probably best to be a hairy, scary, grizzly bear.'
27
The next day at school the animals couldn't wait to tell Miss Cluck how Boris had saved them from the nasty rat pack.
'Oh,Boris!'said Miss Cluck.'What a good bear you are.'
28
At story time everyone rushed to gather around Miss Cluck. There wasn't much room noce Boris had sat down.
But the rest of the class didn't mind one little bit...

Thursday  Friday   Wednesday   The weather is
29
They all had a soft, warm place to sit, after all!
The day that Miss Cluck says there is going to be a new animal in the class, everyone is very excited.
Then, when Boris take his first
hairy scary grizzly steps
into the classroom,everyone screams!
Of course,Boris doesn't mean to be scary at all.
He only wants to make friends.
Then something happens that helps Boris to do just that.

2
Ollie peeped out of the barn door.
Something cold and wet plopped on his nose."What's all this white stuff,Mum?" he squeaked. "Can you eat it?"
"It's snow, Ollie," his mum laughed. "It falls like rain in winter. And no, you shouldn't eat it."
"Can we play in it, then?" he asked.
"please, Mum," cried Sheba and Sam.
"Of course you can," said Mum, "but don't go too far."

3
Sam and Sheba skidded and slid across the icy farmyard.
"Wait for me!" yelped Ollie, racing after them.

4
When the puppies reached the field, they stopped and stared.
There was snow everywhere.
"Let's play!" cried Ollie.

The puppies chased and dug and rolled under the flying snowflakes, until suddenly...

5
...a strange face loomed up in front of them - a face with a huge mouth, huge eyes and HUGE teeth!

6
For a moment the puppies froze with fear.
"RUN!" Sheba cried.

7
The puppies rushed off through the flurrying snowflakes. Ollie's paws scrabbled and skidded as he ran and ran, until at last the dog's barks faded and everything was quiet and still. But where were Sheba and Sam? Where were the farmyard and the barn?

8
"Oh no," whimpered Ollie.
"I'm lost!"

9
"Too whit, too whoo, who are you?"
hooted a voice high above him.
Ollie looked up. Two big, round eyes stared down.

10
"I'm ollie and I've lost my family and I don't know my way home," Ollie squeaked.
"Perhaps you shoulld follow your footprints," suggested the owl.
"They'll lead you home again - but hurry, or they'll be covered in snow."
"Thank you so much!" said Ollie.

11
Tail wagging, he set off. But by the time he had reached the middle of the field, the footprints were disappearing under fresh snow. Soon Ollie couldn't see them at all.
He trudged on and on as the snow grew deeper."I must keep going," he panted."I must get back to my nice, warm basket and supper."

13
At last Ollie reached a large wood. Was this the wood by his farm? If it was, then he was nearly home!

14
The snow had stopped, and evening sunlight shone through the trees.
Crunch, crunch, Ollie crept through the icy leaves. But then, all at once...

15
Swoosh!
Ollie slipped down an icy slope, tumbling over and over...

16
THUMP!
From the shadow of the bushes three fox cubs stared out him.
"Look what the snow's blown in," said one.
"What a scruff!" said another.
"This is our home," said third."Clear off!"
"But I don't know which way to go!" cried Ollie. Sadly he walked away. He would have to find his own way home.

17
Ollie reached the edge of the wood, but still he couldn't see the farm. He tried to cheer himself up. He'd have so much to tell Sam and Sheba when he reached home!
But the snow was falling once more, thicker and faster. As he struggled on, Ollie began to think he would never see his family again.

20
Cold, Hungry, and very, very tired, Ollie crawled under a bush.
A mouse scurried across his feet and disappeared into a small hole. "I wish I could find somewhere safe and warm to sleep, too." Ollie sighed. But as he closed his eyes, he heard something...

21
"Ollie! Ollie! Where are you?"
Ollie peeped out from the bush - it was Mum!
"Mum! Sam! Sheba! I'm over here!"
And across the frozen field Ollie raced to meet them.

22
"We've been looking for hours," cried Mum, "Where have you been?"
"I've had an adventure," said Ollie. "But I'm so glad it's over now."
"So am I," said Mum, gently licking his frozen ears.

23
Home at last, Ollie curled up with his brother and sister in their cosy bed. The puppies wanted to know all about Ollie's Big Adventure.
"Tell us more about the owl!" cried Sheba.
"And the nasty fox cubs!" squeaked Sam.
But, warm and snug, his tummy full of dinner, Ollie had fallen fast asleep.

When Ollie sees snow for the first time, he's amazed. It's wonderful! He rushes outside to play with his brother and sister, but then a huge, scary dog appears and the puppies scatter. Ollie runs and runs, and when at last he stops, he finds himself lost and alone.
Will he ever find his way back to the warmth and safety of his family and home?
