WHEN GRANDPA MOUSE WAS YOUNG
“The very naughtiest thing I ever did?” said Grandpa Mouse, as he took little Peter up in his lap. “I don’t remember what that was. But I will tell you a very naughty thing I once saw done.
“When I was a small mouse.” He went on, “I lived with an uncle and aunt in a Store-closet. This closet had holes that led into the Dining-room and the Kitchen. My uncle and aunt often went in those places, but I always staid in the closed. One night they said to me,’Come, Peter, this is the Feast of the Sugar Candy Soldier. It is already in the Baby’s stocking.’
当鼠爷爷还年轻的时候
“我所做过最调皮的事？”鼠爷爷一边说，一边把他的小彼得放在他的大腿上。“我不记得是什么了，不过我可以告诉你一件我见过的，很调皮的事。
“当我还是一只小老鼠的时候，”他接着说到，“我和我的叔叔婶婶一起住在一个储藏柜里，这个柜子有x些洞，能通到餐厅跟厨房。我的叔叔婶婶经常光顾那些地方，但是我总待在柜子里。一天晚上他们对我说‘来吧，彼得，一个糖果小兵的盛宴已经在宝宝的长筒袜里了。’”
“They led me to the Dining-room hole. But I did not wish to go. I had never seen the Baby, but I heard him. I knew he was the Giant that ruled the house. I had no interest in the Soldier if it were in his stocking.
“But they took me along; and my cousins went too. It was a nice warm room. I smelled the Sugar Candy Soldier at once. It hung in a red stocking, and my uncle and aunt went up thestocking and nibbled out its eyes, its nose, its ears, its mouth.
“Oh! How that Baby cried next morning! They knew in a minute who had been there in the night, ‘Those naughty mice!’ I heard the Baby’s mother say. She brought in a Trap. She let in a Cat. We had no dinner that day. We moved away that night.
“Peter, my child,” added Grandpa Mouse, “whatever you do, never steal from a Baby’s Christmas Stocking!”
“他们把我带到了通向餐厅的那个洞，但是我并不想去，我是从来没见过这个宝宝，但是我听见过他的声音。我知道他就是统治整个屋子的巨人。如果糖果小兵在他的袜子里，那我一点儿也不感兴趣了。
“但是他们还是带我过去了，还有我表哥。那真是一间又漂亮又暖和的屋子，我立刻闻到了糖果小兵的味道。它就挂在一个红色的长筒袜里。然后我的叔叔婶婶爬到袜子上，一点一点啃掉了糖果小兵的眼睛，鼻子，耳朵，嘴巴。
“天哪！第二天早上，宝宝拼命的哭！他们马上就知道晚上谁来过了。“是那些捣蛋的老鼠！”我听见宝宝的妈妈叫道。她拿来一个捕鼠器，还放进来一只猫，结果我们那天没吃到东西，当天晚上就搬走了。
“彼得，我的孩子，”鼠爷爷补充到,“不管你做什么，千万不要去偷宝宝的圣诞礼物啊！”
