第一本:OLIVIA…helps with Christmas
By Ian Falconer
It was the day before Christmas. Olivia and her family had been out all morning, busy with last-minute shopping.
Olivia was exhausted, yet there was still so much to do.
Olivia told her father and Ian to put up the tree, so she could help mother with William’s lunch.
“Olivia, what are you feeding him?”
“Blueberry pie.”
“Oh, darling, that’s going to make him......sick!”
“Whoops.”
By four o’clock Olivia was getting impatient.
“Sweetheart, Santa won't be here for hours,” said her mother. “Now, wipe that soot off your snout and help me untangle these lights.”
“MOMMY!”
“Darling, it’s much easier if you plug them in first. There, isn’t that better?”
Finally the tree was trimmed.
……….5:00PM…..SANTA WATCH……NO SANTA…..RAIN…..
Olivia wanted to be even more of a help. ”Mommy, may I set the table for Christmas Eve dinner?”
“Oh yes, Olivia, that would be very helpful.”
“Why, that’s beautiful, darling. Where did you ever find that perfect little……tree?”
“Would you like to help me build a fire, Olivia?”
“DADDY! WHAT COULD YOU BE THINKING? DO YOU WANT TO COOK SANTA?!”
….7:00 PM….SANTA WATCH….NO SANTA…..(BUT NO RAIN)
After dinner the family gathered to sing carols, Softly they starred :”Angels we have heard on high, sweetly singing o’er the plains. ”
Olivia always lets go for the chorus.
Finally the most important task of the night: leaving treats for Santa Claus.
Olivia said, ”Now it’s time to wait. ” Her mother said, ”Now it’s time for bed.”
But Olivia wasn’t at all sleepy.
She tossed…
And she turned.
First she was hot.
Then she was cold.
Then she heard something on the roof.
Could it be Santa???
It seemed she would never get to sleep---until she woke up and saw it was morning. Olivia ran to get her brothers.
Noiselessly they crept down the stairs.
PRESENTS!
STOCKINGS!
“And look!” cried Olivia. “Santa ate all the cookies and milk!”
“It looks like someone just learned to walk.”
“Now, children,” said Olivia’s mother. ”Finish your breakfast, and then you can open your presents under the ……tree .”
Some of Santa’s offerings were better than others.
Pajamas.
Skis!
Sweater.
Sled!
Booties.
Maracas!
The children thanked their parents for a wonderful Christmas and Olivia announced, “Now I have a present for you.”
“It’s a self –portrait. Won’t it be beautiful over the fireplace?’’
“Well,” said Olivia, “I think I’ll hit the slopes.”
“Skiing takes more practice.”
Olivia and Ian worked all afternoon to make a snowman.
Olivia dressed it.
That evening Olivia finally allowed her father to build a fire. The family sat and warmed their trotters while Olivia’s mother brought them steaming mugs of hot soup.
Soon it was time for bed, but Olivia wasn’t at all sleepy.
Or so she said. But before the lights were even out, she fell into a deep, dreamless slumber…
Well, not quite dreamless.
第二本OLIVIA goes to Venice
Written and illustrated by Ian Falconer
It was time for spring vacation. Olivia decided that she and her family ought to spend a few days in Venice. There was a lot of packing to be done.
“Olivia, you won’t be needing your snorkel,” said her mother, “or your flippers.”
“Mother, apparently the city is often under water and---“
“Or your water skis.”
As they went through the airport, Olivia was searched for weapons. She was very pleased.
On the plane Olivia asked her mother about the food in Venice.
“Don't worry, sweetheart, you can get pizza and ice cream everywhere.”
“EVERYWHERE?”
Olivia was relieved.
They arrived very late at their hotel. Olivia was so sleepy, she didn't even notice the view from her window.
Early the next morning they set forth. They crossed a pretty little bridge. And then another. And then another.
“Wait!” cried Olivia.
“We’ve been crossing the same canal! I think we’re lost.” And my blood sugar is getting low.”
“We’ll get some ice cream,” promised her mother.
“It’s called gelato,” replied Olivia.
They all decided to have gelato.
Crossing a big bridge, Olivia saw the Grand Canal for the first time, lined with its glittering many-coloured palazzos.
Olivia asid to her mother with an edge of hysteria in her voice,” Oh, please—OH, PLEASE, MOTHER—can’t we live in a palazzo on the Grand Canal? ”
It was a life-changing experience for Olivia. She needed another gelato.
Or maybe two…
…or three.
When she was refreshed, they wandered on.
Finally, they passed through a dark archway…
...and into the Piazza San Marco. Olivia was overcome by its beauty. ”Mother, I think I could use another- ”
Her mother sighed. ”I think we all could.”
Olivia wanted to buy corn to feed the pigeons.
She held out the corn, but couldn’t find many pigeons.
But they soon found her.
After that exhausting encounter Olivia required another gelato.
The next day Olivia begged her parents, ”Oh, Mummy, Daddy-PLEASE can we take a gondola ride?”
GONDOLA!
GONDOLA!
Olivia negotiated the price. The gondolier waved them aboard with a gallant “Prego.”
Tourists. Always too much gelato.
Olivia found it very restful. The gondolier did not.
They came out onto the Grand Canal and passed under the magnificent Rialto Bridge.
TIEPOLO
Eventually they emerged out from under the Bridge of Sighs. Olivia sighed.
By now, Olivia was completely entranced. “I must have something to remember Venice by.” I must find the perfect souvenir.
“How about a chandelier?”
“Olivia, that’s bigger than your room!” said her mother.
“What about a gondola?”
“Sweetheart, try to find something you can carry.”
Lace?
Very pretty, but not really very Olivia.
A mask?
No, thought Olivia, I’ll only wear it once.
Perfume?
Olivia doesn’t really like perfume.

Besides, she’s planning her own line.
On their last day in Venice, Olivia and her family went back to San Marco.
The basilica was all peach and gold in the late afternoon light. Mother and Father were finishing their coffee. Olivia and Ian were playing by the bell tower.
“I found it !” cried Olivia. “The perfect souvenir!”
“What is that?” asked her mother.
“One of the actual Atones of Venice,” said Olivia.
“From the bell tower.”
“OLIVIA!” said her mother.
“If everyone took p piece of Venice with them, the city would fall down. Now leave that with the waiter. We’ve got to get to the airport.”
BONG BONG BONG BONG
“Mummy, are those bells ringing for us?”
“Yes, dear, they’re reminding us that we’re late.”
“Oh my –I think we’d better hurry!”
Olivia turned to take one last look at Venice.
“Look, they’re waving us goodbye… I’ll always remember Venice, Mummy. Do you think Venice will remember me?”
“Probably”
As soon as she got on the plane, Olivia fell fast asleep……and dreamed.
