Long ago, there was a land green and fair. Its gently rolling hills were covered with orchards, wide pastures, and rich farmlands. Its forests echoed with bird song and were filled with deer and wild boar, pheasant and hare. The king of this land was wise and just, and the queen was loved and honored by all.
从前，有一个漂亮的地方，绿草茵茵，连绵的山丘上到处都是果园、广阔的牧场和肥沃的农田。那儿的林子里总有鸟儿在吟唱，处处可见小鹿、野熊、野鸡，还有野兔儿。这片土地的国王既睿智又公正，王后则为众人所爱戴。
But then a sad day came to the kingdom, when the queen died after giving birth to her third son. The king grieved for his queen, and though he loved his sons, he could no longer find joy in life. The land seemed to share the king’s grief. Each year after the queen’s death, a little less rain fell on the kingdom. The crops grew sparse, the fruit was eaten by worms, and the animals became thin and weak. Finally, the land was gripped with a terrible drought. Streams dried up, crops withered, and fields turned to dust. The king grew desperate, for his subjects were on the verge of starvation.
然而这个王国迎来了悲伤的一天，这一天王后去世了，留下她那刚刚出世的第三个儿子。国王因为他的王后而悲痛不已，虽然他也爱着他的儿子们，但却再也找不到生活的乐趣。这片土地似乎也感染了国王的悲伤，自从王后去世之后，整个王国的降雨一年比一年少。庄稼长得稀稀拉拉，果子都被虫吃了，动物们变得又瘦又弱。最后，大地落入一场可怕的干旱的魔掌之中，溪流干涸，庄稼枯萎，沃土化作沙尘。国王日益绝望，因为他的子民正在挨饿并且濒临死亡。
One day the king called his sons to him. “A legend says that if a man of royal blood and noble purpose can find the Heart of the World, his purpose will be magically achieved. Surely, our need to end this terrible drought is such a noble cause.”
一天，国王把他的儿子们叫到跟前：“传说，流着皇室血液并怀有高贵理想的人，若能找到世界之心，他的理想就能成真，如有神助。我们想要停止这场可怕的干旱，这无疑正是一个崇高的目标。”
“I have heard this legend,” said Edmund, the eldest prince. “The stories also say that the Heart of the World lies beyond the mountains, in the Enchanted Wood.” This quest sounded laike a great hunt to Edmund, for he loved good sport above all.
“我听过这个传说，”埃德蒙，最年长的那位王子说道。“故事里还说世界之心就在山那边的迷失之林里。”对于埃德蒙来说，这一次探寻听上去就跟一场盛大的狩猎一样，他最爱的就是狩猎一类的运动了。
“I, too, remember those tales,” said Owen, the second prince. “The stories also say that the Enchanted Wood is a place of great danger, and that no one has ever escaped from its deadly snares.” Owen was known far and wide as a great warrior and loved a good fight no matter what the cause.
“我也听过这一类的传说。”二王子欧文说，“故事里还说迷失之林是个极其危险的地方，从没有人能逃脱它那些致命的陷阱。”欧文是远近闻名的伟大的武士，热爱一切搏斗，从不管为何而斗。
Galen, the king’s youngest son, spoke last. “I would gladly go on this worthy quest,” he said. Galen had great admiration for his older brothers and wanted to show that he could be as brave as they were.
国王最小的儿子加仑最后一个开口：“我愿意加入这次探寻，它值得。”加仑对他的哥哥们十分敬仰，想要表现得跟他们一样勇敢。
Edmund and Owen smiled and winked at each other, for Galen was still a lad and had no experience in hunting or in battle.
埃德蒙和欧文微笑着相互眨了眨眼，在他们看来，加仑还是个乳臭未干的孩子，对于狩猎或是争斗都全无经验。
The king looked at each of his sons and spoke once more: “I am too old and weary and have no heart to rule much longer. If one of you succedds in this quest, he will deserve to become king in my stead.”
国王挨个看了看他的儿子们，又一次说：“我太老了，太累了，已经无心再统治下去，你们谁要是在这次探寻中获胜，就继承了我的王位吧。”
Since Edmund was the eldest, he would be the first to attempt the quest. He set out the next morning and crossed the northern mountains. After three days of hard traveling, he saw the Enchanted Wood looming darkly before him, bordered by high, thorn-covered walls. A great iron gate barred the path, and Edmund reined in his horse. An old woman came out of a stone hut to greet him.
因为埃德蒙最为年长，所以他是第一个尝试的人。第二天早晨他就出发了，跨过北方的山脉。三天艰辛的旅程之后，他看到了黑暗中若隐若现的迷失之林，四面是高高的围墙，围墙上满是荆棘。一道大铁门拦住了去路，埃德蒙勒住马，一位老妇人从一所石屋里走出来迎接他。
“I have been expecting you, king’s son,” she said.
“我正等着你呢，国王的儿子。”她说。
“What do you mean, old hag?” said Edmund with disdain. “What could you know of princely affairs?”
“丑老太婆，你说什么呢？”埃德蒙不屑地说，“王子的事情，你都知道什么呀？”
“I know much,” saide the wise woman softly. “And I am bound, as gatekeeper of the Enchanted Wood to give you this warning:
“我知道的可不少，”聪慧的妇人温柔地答道，“做为迷失之林的守门人，我有责任提醒你：
Be true to the quest, at any cost;Stray from the path, and you will be lost.守你所寻，勿忘勿弃；一旦偏离，必将迷失。“Open the gate quickly, old woman,” demanded Edmund, “for I am the greatest huntsman in the kingdom and need no advice from the likes of you.” Bowing humbly, the wise woman fitted a silver key in the lock and slowly pushed open the gate.
“赶紧开门，老太婆。”埃德蒙命令道，“我是这个王国最伟大的猎手，才不需要从你这样的人那里听取建议呢！”那位聪慧的妇人恭顺地鞠了一躬，将一把银色的钥匙插入锁孔，缓缓推开大门。
Edmund spurred his horse into the Enchanted Wood without a backward glance. He had not gone far when he spied something moving through the trees. It was a pure white stag of marvelous proportions. Edmund could not resist a chance to hunt such a magnificent creature. He jumped from his horse, and taking up his bow, he ran from the path in pursuit of the perfect stag.
埃德蒙头也不回，直接策马闯入迷失之林。他没走多远就发现树丛间有东西在移动，那是一头牡鹿，体型匀称，纯白而美丽。埃德蒙没法对这么漂亮的生物视而不见，他誓要猎到这头鹿。于是他从马上一跃而起，举起他的弓，跑离了小径，追随那美丽的牡鹿而去。
A fortnight later, when Edmund had not returned, the king’s second son eagerly set out for the Enchanted Wood. “I will succeed in this quest and bring my foolish brother back with me,” he boasted. Owen was sure he would find and capture the Heart of the World and command it to end the drought.
两星期过去了，埃德蒙还没有回来，国王的二儿子迫不及待地出发前往迷失之林。“我一定会成功的，并把我那愚蠢的哥哥也带回来。”他发誓。欧文坚信他必将找到并俘获世界之心，命它终止这场干旱。
Owen, too, was met by the wise woman when he arrived at the gate. She spoke the same warning to him:
当他到达大门时，欧文也遇到了那位聪慧的妇人，她给了他同样的警告：
Be true to the quest, at any cost;Stray from the path, and you will be lost.守你所寻，勿忘勿弃；一旦偏离，必将迷失。Owen just laughted at her words. “I am the greatest warrior in the kingdom, and I am not afraid of any danger the Wood might hold.” Silently, the wise woman opened the gate for the king’s second son. He proudly entered the Enchanted Wood on his prancing charger, thingking what a grand picture he must make with his jeweled sword and shining coat of mail.
欧文对她的话嗤之以鼻：“我是这个王国里最伟大的武士，这林子里的任何危险都不会吓到我的。”静静地，那位聪慧的妇人为国王的二儿子打开了大门。他跨着战马，雄赳赳气昂昂地踏进了迷失之林，脑子里浮现出一副壮美的画面：那是他用自己装饰有宝石的剑和闪闪发亮的甲胄所开创出来的。
Owen had not traveled far before he, too, was tempted to leave the path. For soon a knight in black armor appeared in the forest a short distance away.
欧文也没能走多远就忍不住偏离了原路，因为一位穿着黑色铠甲的骑士出现在不远处的林子里。
“Who are you, and what king do you serve?” Owen demanded.
“你是谁？为哪位国王效力？”欧文查问道。
The black knight did not speak, nor did he threaten the prince in any way. Instead he remained among the trees, keeping pace with Owen and mocking him with stony silence. Owen held his head high and tried to ignore the knight, but he became more and more angry at the black knight’s insolence.
黑骑士一声不吭，也没有摆出任何威胁王子的姿态。他依旧呆在树丛里，不远不近地跟着欧文，用冰冷的沉默嘲讽着他。欧文高高昂起他的头意图忽视掉这位骑士，但是他却因黑骑士的傲慢而越来越生气。
Finallly, Owen could stand it no longer. With a battle cry, he charged into the Wood after the impertinent knight.
最后欧文忍无可忍，大吼一声，猛然攻向林子里那无礼的骑士。
When another fortnight passed with no sign of Owen or Edmund, the king’s youngest son, Galen, became determined to follow his brothers. He begged his father to let him go on the quest. The king was very reluctant, for he did not know what fate his other sons has met. “I will find the Heart of the World and my brothers as well,” Galen promised. But the king would not relent. Finally, one night, Galen managed to slip out of the castle unseen.
又是两个星期过去了，欧文和埃德蒙一点儿消息都没有，国王最小的儿子加仑下决心要去追寻他的哥哥们。他恳求他的父亲让他继续这一场探寻。国王很不情愿，因为他并不知道自己的另外两个儿子究竟遭遇了什么。“我会找到世界之心的，也会找到我的哥哥们。”加仑下了保证，但国王依然不同意。后来，加仑在一个夜里避开众人的耳目偷偷地溜出了城堡。
Galen, like his brothers, heard the wise woman’s warning at the gate:
就像他的哥哥们一样，加仑也在大门口收到了那位聪慧的妇人的警告：
Be true to the quest, at any cost;Stray from the path, and you will be lost.守你所寻，勿忘勿弃；一旦偏离，必将迷失。But instead of demanding that she open the gate, Galen dismounted from his horse. “If you are willing, kind woman, my horse needs a rest,” he said, “and so do I.”
加仑没有命令她打开大门，而是从马上下来，说：“善良的妇人，我的马儿需要休息一下，我也需要，希望您能帮忙。”
“Put the beast in back and give him some fodder,” she instructed the kings’ son. “Then you can join us for dinner. My daughter Rose can make herbs and wild roots taste like a feast.”
“把马拉到后面给它喂点草料，”她指挥着国王的儿子，“然后你可以和我们一起吃餐晚饭。我的女儿萝丝能把草根做得如盛宴一样美味。
Galen did as she told him, though at home a commoner would have been beaten for telling a prince to tend his own horse.
加仑按她吩咐地去做了，虽然在平日里若是哪个平民胆敢吩咐一位王子亲自去照料他的马匹，那必定会挨上一顿好打。
After dinner, Rose asked Galen, “What do you seek in the Enchanted Wood?” Galen spoke of the suffering of the people and how he would ask the Heart of the World to end the drought. “And if there is a way,” he added, “I will find my brothers. For my father will surely die of grief if I do not.” Galen looked up at the wise woman’s daughter. “You face a most difficult task,” she said. “I hope you will succeed.”
饭后，萝丝问加仑：“你来迷失之林打算要求什么？”加仑描述了人民所承受的苦难，并说出他想请求世界之心停止干旱的打算。“若是可能的话，”他接着说，“我将找回我的哥哥们，要是我没能做到，我的父亲一定会伤心欲绝的。”加仑抬头看着这聪慧的妇人的女儿。“这事还真难办，”她说，“我希望你能成功。”
The next morning, Galen shouldered his pack, choosing to leave his horse in the care of the wise woman. He was surprised when Rose came out of the hut with a waterskin and travel bag. “Please take me with you,” she said, “for I may be able to help you on this quest.”
第二天早上，加仑背起他的包裹，决定把马留在这儿给那位聪慧的妇人照料。令他吃惊的是萝丝也从屋里走了出来，带着一个水囊和旅行袋。“请把我也带上吧，”她说，“或许我能对你有所帮助。”
The wise woman unlocked the gate for Galen and her daughter. She then placed the key on its chain around Rose’s neck. “For luck,” she said. Galen thought that Rose looked more beautiful wearing that simple chain than did all the ladies of the court with their finest jewels.
那聪慧的妇人为加仑和她的女儿开了门锁，然后把钥匙串到链子上，再挂到萝丝的脖子上。“祝你们好运，”她说。加仑觉得萝丝带着这简单的链子可真美，比宫里那些戴上各种精致的首饰的夫人们还要漂亮。
Rose had no trouble matching Galen’s swift pace. The Enchanted Wood was a gray, bleak place, unnaturally still and quiet. Its trees were strangely twisted and gnarled, and thorny brambles grew thickly on all sides. The two travelers walked for hours watching pale mists swirling into fantastic shapes that seemed almost alive. Finally, the mists grew thicker and thicker, until it was so difficult to see they were guided only by the low stone wall that bordered the narrow path.
萝丝毫不费力地赶上了加仑轻快的步伐。迷失之林是一个灰暗而荒凉的地方，安静地异乎寻常。这儿的树木扭曲缠绕在一起，显得十分怪异，四面八方都长满了多刺的荆棘。两个旅行者走了好几个小时，看着白雾盘旋成各种神奇的形状，仿佛拥有生命一般。最后，迷雾变得越来越浓，
Suddenly, Galen and Rose heard a commotion in the Wood. They stopped and peered in, straining to see through the fog. Then, with one graceful bound, a magnificent white stag leapt over the path in front of them and disappeared into the forest on the other side. Close behind appeared Edmund, bow in hand, haggard and out of breath. He lurched onto the path.
突然，加仑和萝丝听到林中有骚乱的声音，他们停下来望过去，努力想透过迷雾看清楚。这时，伴随着优雅的一跳，一只漂亮的白牡鹿从他们跟前跃过小径，消失在另一侧的密林之中。紧跟着出现的是埃德蒙，手里拿着弓，面容憔悴，气喘吁吁，跌跌撞撞直奔小路而来。
“Edmund, wait!” cried Galen, but it was too late. His brother had leapt off the path again, before Galen could make a move to stop him. Edmund followed the stag’s trail and was soon swallowed by the fog.
“等一等，埃德蒙！”加仑喊道，但是太迟了，他的哥哥已经再一次跨过了小路，加仑根本来不及做任何动作去阻止他。埃德蒙跟着牡鹿的踪迹而去，很快便被迷雾吞噬了。
“I must go after him!” Galen declared. But Rose held him back, saying, “No, my prince! Remember the warning. If you leave the path, you too will become enchanted, and all will be lost.”
“我得跟过去！”加仑说。但是萝丝拉住了他，说：“不，我的王子！记住那个警告。如果你偏离了这条路，就会中了魔法，最终彻底迷失。
Galen looked sadly after his brother and knew that she was right. With slow, reluctant steps, he continued down the path.
加仑难过地望着他的哥哥离去的方向，心里明白她是对的，只得挪着沉重的步伐，缓缓地沿着小路继续走下去。
In a few hours the mist that had covered the forest began to clear, and Galen and Rose stopped to rest. Galen forced himself to eat although he had no appetite. As the two sat on the ground, they felt a faint vibration, then heard a drumming sound, which quickly grew louder and louder. Rose and Galen were nearly knocked from the path when a riderless, wild-eyed horse galloped by. “Owen’s charger!” cried Galen. “But what has become of my brother?”
过了几个小时，被迷雾覆盖的森林渐渐清朗起来，加仑和萝丝停下歇了会儿。虽然一点食欲也没有，加仑还是逼着自己吃了点东西。他俩正坐在地上呢，突然感觉到一阵轻微的晃动，随后听到恍如鼓点的声音，并越来越响。一匹无人驾驭的马儿疯跑过来，差点就把萝丝和加仑撞出小路。“那是欧文的战马！”加仑大喊，“可我的哥哥究竟怎么了？”
A clash of metal upon metal sounded in the Wood. Suddenly Owen and the black knight emerged from the trees, locked in endless combat. Owen looked worse than Edmund had, for he bled from many wounds. Galen drew his sword, ready to run to his brother’s side. Then he hesitated and turned to Rose. “This is indeed an evil wood,” declared Galen. “I cannot risk setting foot off this path, even to help my own brothers.” Slowly Galen put away his sword and turned from his brother, saying grimly, “Let us go on.”
林子里响起一阵金属撞击的声音，突然间欧文和一位黑衣骑士从树丛中冒出来，在激战中难舍难分。欧文看上去比埃德蒙还要糟糕，因为他到处都是伤口，还流着血。加仑拔出剑来，正要跑上前帮他哥哥，但却又犹豫了。他转向萝丝：“这真是个可怕的林子，我不能冒险踏出这条小路半步，就算我的亲哥哥正需要我的帮助，也决不能……”缓缓地，加仑把自己的剑收起来，背向他的哥哥，声音闷闷的：“我们走吧。”
Galen was lost in sorrow at the fate of his two brothers, and he wondered what doom the Enchanted Wood held for him. He felt this feet grow heavier with each step. After a while, he spoke. “I cannot understand this enchanted place. My brothers were tempted by what they love most, hunting and fighting. But where, then, is my temptation?”
一想到他的两位哥哥的命运，加仑就陷入悲痛之中，他猜测着这片迷失之林究竟为他准备了怎样可怕的宿命。他觉得自己的脚一步比一步沉重，过了一会儿，他说话了：“我真搞不懂这个被施了魔法的地方，我的哥哥们被他们的挚爱所引诱，一个是狩猎，另一个是战斗；那么等着我的，会是什么呢？”
“Don’t you see?” said Rose. “What you love most is your brothers, so you wanted to leave the road to help them. Instead, you chose to stay on the path and remain true to your purpose to help all the people of the kingdom.”
“你还没发现吗？”萝丝说，“你最爱的，就是你的哥哥，所以你想要离开这条路去帮他们。不过，你最终还是选择留了下来，坚持自己的目标，帮助王国的全体民众。”
As she spoke, Galen noticed that all around them the forest ahd begun to change. Trees that were stunted and leafless a moment before began to branch and bud. Blossoms appeared on lifeless thorn bushes. Pale green points sprang up out of the moldy earth, turning into wildflowers that spread over the ground like a carpet being unrolled for a king. Watching the forest change, Galen felt lighter and less burdened. Then, as they walked around a bend, the path came to an end in a sunny, open glade.
加仑一边听着她的话，一边发现他们周围的森林开始发生变化。刚才那些连叶子都没几片的矮小的树木，一瞬间舒展开来，冒出了新的枝叶；死气沉沉的荆棘丛也冒出了花朵；浅绿色的小芽儿从松软的泥土里钻出来
There, in the center of the clearing, stood a wonderful tree, the like of which they had never seen. They understood that here was the Heart of the World, as old as the earth itself. Three enormous trunks intertwined and grew as one, in perfect harmony of form. The great tree’s crown of leaves shone red-gold in the light, and a spring poured from between its roots, forming a small pool that sparkled in the sun.
那边，一棵神奇的树站在空地中间，那是他们从未见过的一种树。他们意识到这儿就是那和这大地一样古老的世界之心，三个巨大的树干合抱成一棵大树，显得无比的和谐，树冠上的叶子在光亮中金红金红的，树根间涌出一股清泉，化作一个小池，池水在日光下波光粼粼。
Without hesitation, Galen cupped his hands and filled them. He drank deeply of the water from the Heart of the World, and then he said, “It is my solemn wish that, from this time on, there will always be enough rain for a bountiful harvest throughout the land.” Immediately dark rain clouds began to form overhead, blowing southward toward the parched fields of the kingdom. Galen had fulfilled the quest.
加仑毫不犹豫地用双手掬起一捧水，深深地喝了一口这从世界之心流出来的水，然后郑重地说道：“惟愿甘霖降，万物生，谷物足，无复有旱。”话音未落，上空聚来厚厚的雨云，随着风往南飘去，飘向这个王国干渴的田地。加仑圆满地完成了使命。
Then Rose stepped forward. She took the key to the Enchanted Wood from around her neck, and holding it in her outstretched hand, she chanted:
这时萝丝也走向前，她将自己脖子上挂着的迷失之林的钥匙摘了下来，握在伸出去的手中，唱道：
The Enchanted Wood has lost its powerTo lure and tempt; for in this hourThe quest is won, the land renewed.This Heart’s not meant for mortal view!迷失之林，魔法已失；所愿既遂，所惑当止；万物已然新生，此心无需再存！Then Rose threw the key into the pool, and before Galen could express his surprise, the air around them began to shimmer. As they backed away from the Heart of the World, it faded and soon disappeared from sight. Even the pool was empty and dry.
然后萝丝将钥匙扔进了小池，加仑甚至都还来不及表达他的惊讶，只见周边的空气开始闪烁着光芒，当他们退离世界之心的时候，它渐渐得淡去了，最终从眼前消失，就连那小池也干掉了，变得空空的。
Rose answered his questioning look. “For generations my ancestors have been bound as keepers of the gate. We have warned many, many men who were lured by the power that the Heart of the World can grant. We knew that unless they were pure of heart, they would stray from the path and meet their doom. Yet we were bound to let them try, knowing that only one was destined to succeed.”
“一直以来，”萝丝看出了他的一脸疑问，“我们家祖祖辈辈都在看守这道大门，有多少人醉心于迷失之林所拥有的魔力而来到了这里，我们就给了多少次的警告，可是他们都偏离小路，走向厄运，然而我们不得不让他们都去尝试，我们知道只有一个人注定是会成功的。”
“Surely any man could succeed with your help,” interrupted Galen.
“只要有了你的帮助，任何人都必然可以成功。”加仑打断了她的话。
“I have not offered my help to any other,” said Rose. “And now, I have also freed my mother and myself from the binding of the Wood. For it is no longer enchanted and will never again need a gatekeeper.”
“我从没有向其他人提供过帮助，”萝丝说，“现在，我把妈妈和自己都给解放了，我们不再受这片林子的约束了，因为它已经失去了诱人迷失的魔力，也就不再需要一个守门人了。”
Galen realized what Rose had done: “Now no one else will be doomed to failure.” His brothers and the other men would be freed. The young prince seized Rose’s hand and hurried back to the road. It was not long before they came upon Owen. He sat on a tree stump, holding his broken sword and looking ashamed. The trees around him bore many hack marks, but there was no black knight to be seen. He was truly glad to hear that Galen had fulfilled the quest. “you deserve to be king,” Owen told him.
加仑这才明白萝丝刚刚做了些什么：“也就是说，再没有谁会注定走向失败了。”他的哥哥们还有其他的人也都将被解放，年轻的王子一把抓住萝丝的手，匆匆地走回小路。不一会儿他们就碰上了欧文，他坐在一个树墩上，握着他那残破的剑，一副惭愧的样子。他身边的那几棵树满是砍过的痕迹，但是却根本没有那黑衣骑士的影子。当他听说加仑圆满完成使命时，由衷地感到高兴，他说：“你是真正的国王。”
Farther on they met Edmund coming toward them on the path. Though he was thin and weak, Edmund embraced his brother. “I was a fool to let my love of hunt come before all else,” he said.
稍远一点，他们又遇上了埃德蒙正沿着小路朝他们走来，虽然埃德蒙消瘦虚弱，他还是抱住了他的弟弟，说：“我真是蠢，竟然将自己对狩猎的喜爱放到第一位。”
Hand in hand, Rose and Galen returned with his two brothers to the gate. The wise woman was waiting there and thanked them for freeing her. She turned to Galen and said, “It seems my daughter chose wisely. I hoped you were the one who would win the Heart of the World.”
手拉着手，萝丝和加仑还有他的两位哥哥，都回到了大门口。那位聪慧的妇人正在那儿等着，她为着自己重获自由而向他们表示感谢，又转向加仑说：“看起来我的女儿选对了，我想你就是那位赢得世界之心的吧。”
The king’s joy knew no bounds when all three of his sons returned from the Enchanted Wood, and he welcomed the gentle and beautiful Rose and her wise mother. The rain quickly brought back life to the parched fields, and that winter there was bread to spare in the kingdom. The king held a great feast to honor Galen and Rose, and the long-absent sounds of music and merriment filled the castle. With the coming of the new year, the fruit of the orchards grew sweet and the pastures became lush and green. Birds sang in meadow and forest, where deer and wild boar, pheasant and hare, thrived in abundance.
